Beauty inspires. In history, it is the common thread that drives artists, painters, sculptors and writers to create, to attempt to capture it and distill it into an understandable idea. In turn, their vision of what beauty is has shaped our vision of it. And even if beauty is in the eye of the beholder, our collective definition of it has evolved, perhaps through these artistic depictions. It has come to be defined by allure, glamour, symmetry, sexiness and perfection. True beauty, however, is confidence and that rare ability to be completely, totally comfortable in one’s own skin. Real beauty is an intangible quality that defies definition, boundaries and standards and which ultimately asks people to be themselves.
Through the media that bombards us, the art we absorb and the schools of thought we subscribe to or teach, it seems as though we have developed our definition of beauty to be more efficient. It has been narrowed down, boxed in and packaged in such a way that it is easily recognized, easily discarded and dictated by the personal taste of a few. In so doing, perhaps we have starved it — and ourselves — of diversity. Perhaps we have honed our idea of beauty so finely that we actually confused it with perfection. Is this a useful goal? To be concerned with discerning our taste than with tasting more. This book is an exploration — and ultimately a celebration — of like-minded artists working to expand the idea of what are classic beauty norms, to explode those definitions. As in, there should be no expectations except that every woman is an inspiration. Every woman already is a work of art, and these photographs serve only to amplify and highlight what was already there.
Each photo shoot was a unique, liberating and exhilarating experience; a collaborative process between photographer Erez Sabag, creative director David Warren, makeup artist Georgina Billington, and most importantly, the subject. Models were asked to strip away their pre-existing ideas of beauty, to give their input on what felt comfortable and right. With every image, clichés and stereotypes were challenged. By blending all the elements that inspire, excite and intrigue — the individuality, personality, diversity, spontaneity — the team set out to create their own definition of beauty… Gorgiality, as Erez Sabag coined it on set.
