Block Island, located 11 miles off the coast of Rhode Island, is an important stopover for migrating birds.
One day in the early 20th century, Elizabeth Dickens, a native inhabitant of the island, began collecting the dead birds.
She stuffed them, catalogued them – and created her own project including 172 ornithological and handpicked ‘specimens’.
