This is India? A different approach to portrait photography - Dayanita Singh on show at Huis Marseille in Amsterdam

Dayanita Singh is renowned for her portraits of the urban upper-class as well as middle-class of India. She photographs families, workers, outside or at home. First and foremost, she reveals a different side of India – a side she belongs to and which she understands.

The Huis Marseille in Amsterdam is now showing her characteristic works and combines the highly usual with the rather atypical. Her newest pictures focus on a different kind of photography, which puts places instead of people in the spotlight.

The exhibition presents pictures with a broad range of interior spaces, from the ballroom of an 18th century palace to more humble, private abodes. Her camera captures museums, libraries and the ‘wedding stages’ that are specially constructed for traditional wedding ceremonies. All pictures unite the foregone and the intense in intimate observation, which captures sensitivity for time and place.

Dayanita Singh was born in New Delhi in 1961 and had bee living there and in Goa for the most part of her life. In the 1980s, she worked as a photojournalist for international magazines and newspapers– including the New York Times – and later gained a reputation for her documentary portraits.

Her oeuvre de vivre includes solo exhibitions in the gallery Mirchandani + Steinruecke in Mumbai, as well as Museums in Hamburg, Berlin and Birmingham. Considerate group projects featuring her pictures took place in Wellesley, at Museum Ludwig in Cologne and Tate Modern in London.
