2009 Deutsche Börse Photography Prize at The Photographers’ Gallery, London
Photography fans take note: The Photographers’ Gallery, just off Oxford Street in London, is once again playing host to the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize in 2009.
Four photographers have been nominated for the prestigious prize of £30,000, which has been sponsored by Deutsche Börse since 2005. Paul Graham, Emily Jacir, Tod Papageorge and Taryn Simon were selected by the Academy, a group of more than 100 international experts on photography.
Ever since 1996 the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize, which was set up by The Photographer’s Gallery, has been rewarding “a contemporary photographer of any nationality who has made the most significant contribution to the medium of photography in the previous year”.
Last year’s winner was Esko Männikkö from Finland who was nominated for his “Cocktails” images, which suggest a narrative about life in a rural setting.
The exhibition will be on show from 20 February until 12 April and the winner will be announced on 25 March. Admission is free.
So next time you find yourself wandering aimlessly down Oxford Street with the credit crunch blues, just pop down the side street to The Photographer’s Gallery for some cultural enlightenment!!
