Albert Renger-Patzsch Prize 09 - goes to Italian photographer Paola de Pietri, for her TO FACE book project

The Dietrich Oppenberg Trust, in cooperation with the Folkwang Museum, has awarded the 2009 Albert Renger-Patzsch Prize and its 25,000 Euro prize money to Italian photographer Paola de Pietri (*1960, Reggio Emilia). The European prize is awarded every three years and aims to help photographers realise photo book projects.

The concept of Paola de Pietri’s ‘TO FACE’ book deals with the tracks left by WWI on the Alps between Italy and Austria. Her photographs depict trenches, bomb craters, collapsed dig outs, which can still be identified in the remote landscapes, and which document the lives of soldiers in war zones. Her work is centred on the slow transformation of this landscape.

In 1997 Paola de Pietri graduated from DAMS, University Bologna/Italy. Her photography has been exhibited internationally since the mid 90s.

The Dietrich Oppenberg Trust Prize is awarded in honour of photographer Albert Renger-Patzsch’s achievement in the history of documentary-orientated photography and his contribution to the development of photography books.
