American Photographs – Architecture and the Abstract Image : a photo exhibition during Hamburg's Summer of Architecture

The ‘American Photographs – Architecture and the Abstract Image’ exhibition shown at the Renate Kammer Gallery during this year’s Summer of Architecture is the prelude to an exhibition series of American photography.

American Photographs is an exciting and contrasting juxtaposition of work by well known and less known American photographers. The exhibition concept differs from others in that it mainly presents so called “vintage prints”, as in first prints, which were immediately made from the photographer’s negatives.

Work will be shown by photographers including Berenice Abbott, Margaret Bourke-White, Walker Evans, Ruth Bernhard and recently deceased architecture photographer Julius Shulman.

Curator Erle Bessert selected 50 pieces by 28 photographers, predominantly realised in the 1930s and 40s. Some of the images call to mind the current economic situation as they reflect the mood of the times.

Additional exhibitions titled ‘… about faces’ and ‘Landscape and Still Life’ are in the pipelines to follow in the ‘American Photographs’ series.
