Dennis Hopper : Photographs 1961–1967 - momentous images of an entire generation

On his birthday in 1961 his wife Brooke Hayward presented him with a 35mm Nikon camera. From that moment onwards, Dennis Hopper had his camera with him at all times, and wouldn’t shy from using it either: on film sets, at parties, in galleries, on the highway and on political marches. A little known passionate photographer, his images from 1961 until 1967 have now been published in a photo book. Moments of a whole generation.

He photographed film idols, pop stars, artists, his girlfriends and complete strangers. At the centre of cultural upheaval in art, music and politics, he photographed stars such as Tina Turner in the studio, Andy Warhol at his first West Coast show, Paul Newman on set, and even Martin Luther King during the Civil Rights March from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.

Dennis’ first film roles included two James Dean classics : ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ and ‘Giant’. James Dean was also one of his friends in private. In his photographic and filmic shots, Dennis’ observation is characterised by intuition and sharp wits, without it coming across as posed. For example his image of James Dean behind a broken windscreen makes one believe that he could not only capture the moment, but also see the future.

Dennis was considered as ‘headstrong’ in the early 60s – which was not exactly encouraging for one’s career. He studied at Lee Strasberg’s The Actors Studio and was introduced by B-Movie director Roger Corman, to his future partner in crime Peter Fonda.

In 1969 the two of them filmed the Easy Rider road movie with a budget of 400,000 dollars, which was already considered rather frugal in those days. The film became a cult hit of the hippie movement and a mile stone in film history.

Easy Rider cleared up the dusty clichés of the parent generation and got the protagonists back on the street. An entire generation could identify with Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson.

The extensive picture selection was made in collaboration with gallerist Tony Shafrazi and includes a third of previously unpublished photographs.

The book provides an elaborate insight of the experiences of one of America’s most fascinating personalities. It includes a foreword by art pioneer Walter Hopps and an extensive biography by journalist Jessica Hundley.

This edition is limited to 1,500 numbered copies, each signed and numbered by Dennis Hopper. They retail at 500 Euro and are of course published by Taschen Verlag.

GoSee presents a generous insight of the Easy Rider’s unique and highly personal documentation work.
