The Beauty of the Moment - German painter Peter Dreher at Wagner + Partner Gallery, the UPdate UPwarm 2012 with surprise guest and gallerist Cai Wagner as a SCREENings Judge at the UPdate

The official UPdate 2012 ‘UPwarm’ will take place in the wonderful Wagner + Partner Gallery space on Karl-Marx-Allee. Beautifully surrounded by the current ‘Die Kleeblume’ (clover flower) birthday exhibition – a series by great German painter Peter Dreher.

Gallerist Cai Wagner told GoSee ‘the Black Forest based 80 year old artist is a ‘serial perpetrator’, since one painting is never enough. Dreher has been relentlessly painting for almost 40 years and he repeatedly returns to an empty glass. He has created over 5,000 series for this series, titled ‘Tag um Tag guter Tag’ (day for day good day).’

He continues, ‘the Kleeblume also took 36 years to complete and presents a wilting clover flower in the same format transcending time and space. His tireless repetition of a motif questions and challenges representation in painting. Not just the image itself, but the painting process itself is central to his work’.

A book published by Modoverlag (ISBN 978-3-86833-094-6) accompanies the exhibition. In conversation with curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, Peter Dreher defies the demand for novelty and change: the painter comments ‘one does not have to change the subject to prove one’s love of painting’.

But sometimes, dear Mr Dreher, change is good, at least when it comes to locations. Hence we have heard that the Wagner + Partner Gallery is planning to relocate? There goes our wise ass (as always) comment.

‘The gallery has been hosting high quality exhibitions in the impressive space on Karl-Marx-Allee for over four years. International artists were given the opportunity to exhibit in Berlin in a generous space in the style of a large-scale art venue. The commitment to the unique architectural location of Karl-Marx-Allee will be continued in January at Strausberger Platz, which connects to neighbouring Alexanderplatz’.

The gallery will continue its programme in the former GDR Inter Flight Office space including original features. The addition of its two exhibition rooms will provide artists with even greater flexibly to present their work in the future. Now that sounds pretty good – and we will of course be reporting on this. Or Cai may even blog about it himself on his GoSee ACCOUNT.

We also think it is fantastic that Cai Wagner will be supporting the SCREENings Award ‘Internet goes Print’ this year. And since the art expert doesn’t know that much about the fashion circus, we were particularly interested to hear his feedback after viewing the portfolios.

‘It wasn’t easy. There were so many amazingly great photos in the selection. I got so much inspiration and am impressed by how much is out there. However, after days of clicking through and from the perspective of a gallerist I have selected my Top 20 according to your criteria. I have attached the list. What happens next?’

Simple: the judging will continue on 26 October at the Ritz Carlton at the UPdate 12. This is where all judges, headed by Michael M.Maschke, Head of Creative Services at Saatchi & Saatchi, will meet and share their Top 3. We can’t wait!
