Elaine Lings : Mongolia - Land of the Deer Stone at Galerie Lichtblick, Cologne. An epic tale of magic and tradition.

Ethnic groups and tribes that remain untouched by urban civilisation, staying true to their old, traditional lifestyles have become a rarity. However, Mongolia is still a haven for such groups; they travel in Nomadic communities, live in jurts and their most prized possession is a horse. Elaine Ling travelled to this distant country in search of deer stones and shamanic rocks. She returned laden with images filled with the calm and magic of a foregone age.

Seven hundred years have passed since the founding of the vast Eurasian empire, which Mongolian warriors carried out under Khan’s reign. In 2002, the photographer began to explore the infinite Gobi Desert and discovered a world where Shamans still speak with ghosts and old forms of Buddhism are experiencing a new revival. Her black/white images depict capture a modest lifestyle in a huge country.

Elaine Ling was born in Hong Kong and moved to Canada aged nine. She studied piano, cello and medicine and became a doctor. Her work in isolated hospitals in the far North of America gave her a first taste of travelling long distances, where she would met local people such as the Inuit and Kwakiutl. Her photographic career was born of the inspiration she gained from meeting these peoples.

Ever since then, she has explored the seclusion of deserts in Mongolia, Namibia, North Africa, India and Australia, travelled to Machu Picchu and Cappadocia. Today her works are held in museum and gallery collections all over the world.
