Elliott Erwitt and the hidden points. Atlas Gallery, London, presents 'Sequentially Yours'.

Many photographers aspire to the one and only perfect moment to take the ideal picture. To Elliot Erwitt however, it is rather the undetermined moments that count - because if you place these next to each other, they begin to tell a story, which can be just as fascinating. His famous comic strips are full of humour and playfulness and will be delighting audiences until the 19th of March 2011 at the Atlas Gallery in London and here on GoSee!

His episodes are all about anecdotes from daily life: a woman takes her dog for a walk on the cemetery, a couple sunbathes on the deck of a ship. 'Where is the punch line?', you might ask yourself. The sudden and tiny changes, which are captured by Erwitt and his camera are collaged together, pervaded by his ironic nature. There is a lot of comic potential in each and every person, you just have to look in the right places.

Sometimes, the series consist of two, sometimes twenty motifs, but all are created alongside commissioned photography projects all over the world. It is not a complete coincidence that they appear like stills from a film: Elliott Erwitt studied film and produced documentaries, as well as comedies.

The US American was born in 1928 in Paris and spent his childhood with his Russian parents in Milan, he has been living in the USA since 1939. During his studies at Los Angeles City College, he worked in a photography laboratory and moved to NYC in 1948, to study filmmaking.

Erwitt always entertained the notion of dabbling in all sorts of genres. From traditional photojournalism with pictures of Fidel Castro next to Che Guevara, to cult portraits of Hollywood Stars such as Marilyn Monroe, this, by the way, is also part of the exhibition. By now, he increasingly concerns himself with personal works, which tends to capture his favourite subject: dogs.
