Eternal longing, endless return - Ragnar KJARTANSSON in a time warp and exhibiting at the Frankfurter Kunstverein

To celebrate Iceland as the visiting country at the Frankfurt book fair 2011, the Frankfurt Kunstverein presents the first large solo-exhibition in Germany of young, Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson (1976) until the 16th of October. The exhibition includes 15 video works, picture series and installations from the last ten years as well as a new sculptural work, which was commissioned especially for the show.

Ragnar, who comes from a theatre family, pursues a multidisciplinary approach in his art. In his work, he uses elements of fine art, music and predominantly the theatre. The results are happenings, installations, drawings, photographs and videos. The artist is the protagonist in many of his works and plays different roles in each one of them: you could find him miming a knight, a rockstar, revolutionary or Old Nick himself. In the role of the art genius, obsessed with the quest for the perfect picture, he stirred up the art scene during the Venice Biennale 2009 with a six-month marathon performance in the Icelandic pavilion.

The application of repetition and loops and the associated concepts of duration and endurance are focal points of his work and evolve around the sensations of grief, desperation but also beauty.

The former child of the theatre tends to use literary, musical or gestured moments of emotion and expression to perform them to a stage of exhaustion or aggravation, usually pushing the borders of what is possible and not always with the audience’s well being at heart.

The sources of inspiration for his ongoing performances are – next to the performance of the 1970s itself – the Icelandic form of 'Storytelling' - a tradition of narrative expression in Iceland that goes back to the handing-down of oral history and repetition of ancient knowledge and stories. Therefore, his work oscillates between locally coloured folklore and pop-cultural elements and creates a gripping and at the same time intimidating insight into history and presence.

The exhibition is part of the Art and culture program – Legendary Iceland – special guest at the Frankfurt book fair 2011.
