Erotica by Daido Moriyama - the Japanese master's nude photography on show in Paris

Daidō Moriyama (* 10. October 1938 in Ikeda, Ōsaka) is one of the most significant Japanese photographers of the second half of the 20th century.

He studied design and photography in Kobe, Japan. In 1961, he immigrated to Tokyo. His first photography book – 'Japan, a theatre' – was published in 1968.

By the end of the 1960s and in the early 1970s, quite unusual for the Japan of yesteryear, he preferred photographing on the fringes of society, the red light district and the open streets. Erotic photography was not the focal point however, but it was not shied away from either and became an important segment of his work.

His first nudes were shot in 1969, natural nakedness in a natural context, before or after sex. On the bed, spread legs, under the shower . . .

These motifs, as well as many others, including numerous that were produced for Playboy, are on show in the Da End Gallery in Paris. About 50 photographs, some colour, some black & white, but all reflect the culture shock of losing the Second World War.
