Esther Haase : exhibition at CAMERA WORK, NEW YORKER campaign, Jan-Holger Mauss in a bikini for GUDBERG, and the JAHNKE calendar

From 24 January until 28 February 2009, the Camera Work Gallery will present work by Esther Haase and Susanne Schapowalow. Esther’s exhibition is whole heartedly dedicated to the Tango. The passionate images were realized in Cuba and Argentina.

Esther’s photos reflect the dynamics of the dance. It was at an early age, during her ballet training that she discovered her love of dance as “the most intimate form of expression”. Her pictures don’t simply concentrate on acrobatic skill, but rather on the passion, longing, freedom, eroticism and surrender of the body for the duration of a dance.

Esther Haase captured the energy of the dancers and models in front of a backdrop of local bars and the Milongas between Buenos Aires, Havanna and Santiago.

She completed a classic dance training at Cologne’s academy and spent several years afterwards gracing the stage. She studied at the Hochschule der Künste in Bremen from 1988 to 1993. This was followed by a placement at the Art Department of Men’s Vogue in Munich. She has worked as a photographer since 1993 and has travelled around the world for assignments. Esther has been awarded countless national and international distinctions for her work, such as the Reinhard-Wolf-Prize, the Art Directors Club (ADC) Gold and the Kodak Photo Prize.

The dancing photographer and her team travelled to Hamburg’s harbour and a castle for the NEW YORKER clothing brand. The styling was carried out by JELENA Schneider c/o BIGOUDI, the hair and make-up department was run by STEFFI Willmann and SERVULLO Mendez, both c/o BASICS. The post production was carried out by GoSee Member ELEKTRONISCHE SCHÖNHEIT.

Esther shot an editorial for GUDBERG magazine. Artists Jan-Holger Mauss, Julius Deutschbauer and Gerhard Spring acted as models.

For over 10 years, Esther Haase has been photographing the patients of the Jahnke nursing service for their annual calendars, 2009 was no exception. The styling was carried out by Jelena, the hair and make-up was by Steffi Willmann, Wiebke Olschewski and Servullo Mendez, all three c/o BASICS. The art direction was in the hands of Peer Hanslik, the locations were scattered all over Berlin. The calendar can be purchased from www.jahnkepflege.de, all proceeds go towards the nursing service. The calendar has also been awarded the Kodak Photo Calendar prize and the GKS Non Profit-Project / Social Award of Excellence.
