Swiss Foundation of Photography : I never hate a place. Joël Tettamant, Local Studies, exhibition and catalogue

Joël Tettamanti, who was born in Cameroon, 1977 and grew up in Lesotho and Switzerland, is a traveller between cultures. He takes photographs all over the world, travelling without a guide to unknown places where he gains inspiration for quiet, memorable photographs through the chance of coincidence and unforeseen encounters.

He commutes between Greenland and Mexico, China and Spain, between landscapes in which the presence of man is barely perceptible and cities in which nature has but almost entirely ebbed away. He focuses his both analytical and intuitive eye on specific objects with which people have «furnished» their living space: absurd scaffoldings, dense apartment blocks, sprawling settlements and timeless ruins - alien objects, bordering between usefulness and decay.

They are frequently located in an eerie emptiness that reveals their forms and an enigmatic inner relationship. Tettamanti's colour photographs capture our urban, globalised world in which inconspicuous details and the quality of light subtly evoke meaning in a suggestive way. «I never hate a place - even when I went to Luxembourg and shot a nuclear power plant. I always find some beauty in such places, something unreal maybe.»

Joël Tettamanti studied visual communication and photography at the Ecole Cantonale d'art Lausanne (ECAL) from 1997 until 2001. Since then his work has been displayed in numerous exhibitions printed in many publications in Switzerland and abroad. The exhibition at the Fotostiftung Schweiz focuses on the project «Local Studies», published as a book in 2006, which Tettamanti has continuously expanded since. With its approx. 60 mostly large-format colour photographs the exhibition «Local Studies» is the first comprehensive presentation of Tettamanti's work in Switzerland.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue: Joël Tettamanti, Local Studies, etc publications, Berlin 2006, 224 S., ca. 250colour illustrations, with a glossary of the artist’s terms, as well as  additional writers, CHF 78.- (only available at the Zentrum für Fotografie’s shop).
