Friederike von Rauch : three colours grey - the cool beauty of concrete walls and deserted sparse landscapes

The KUNSTAGENTEN gallery presents new works by Friederike von Rauch (*1967) who made a name for herself primarily due to her reduced perspectives of architecture and landscapes.

The photographs in the Ash and Harpa series were created during a residency programme of a contemporary museum exhibition in the Icelandic Hafnaborg Museum. The ‘Ash’ series saw her shoot in direct proximity of the ash-spitting volcano Eyjafjallajökull. The pictures show the usually green south of the island, veiled in a muted grey.

The Harpa photographs were produced within the skeleton construction work of the Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik, which will become on of the city’s most significant locations, sporting a large freestanding sculpture of Olafur Eliasson. Once again, Friederike von Rauch’s feeling for the beauty of inconspicuous details comes to light. Dark rooms full of barren concrete walls held in shadowy grey and only a few illuminated surfaces.

Frederike von Rauch studied to become a silversmith and went on to study industrial design at the University of the Arts Berlin. Over the course of her career and work as a location scout for large film productions, she deepened her interested in architecture. Her work was nominated for the Gabriele-Münter–Prize in 2010.

Her works have been presented in solo exhibitions, including the Hafnarborg Museum, Iceland (2010), the Galerie KUNSTAGENTEN, Berlin (2009) and the Kabinet van Cultuur, Brussels (2008), the Vlaams-Nederlands Huis deBuren, Brussels (2007), Gallery Fifty One Fine Art Photography, Antwerp (2007).
