Galerie Bugdahn und Kaimer : Hollywood Backstage - 42 x Jeff Bridges at the DC Open 2010 season opening

This weekend the two rival cities of Cologne and Düsseldorf will once again kiss and make up – well, at least when it comes to the exchange of art and inspiration. The second edition of DC Open 2010 Düsseldorf Cologne Galleries sees the shared season opening in 65 galleries.

Düsseldorf’s Bugdahn und Kaimer Gallery presents ‘Jeff Bridges. Pictures’ the first solo exhibition of 42 works by actor and photographer Jeff Bridges in Germany and a contribution to the ‘Deutschlandpremieren’ (German Premieres) project by Düsseldorf’s galleries for the Quadriennale 2010. In other words, a good excuse to visit Düsseldorf.

Jeff’s career kicked off with his wife Susan’s wedding present in 1977 – his first Wide Lux. This panorama camera, which was first produced in 1948 in Japan and has a pivoting lens instead of a traditional shutter, became his trusty companion on film sets where he took his first photos.

He used this camera to shoot a ‘behind the scenes’ series of countless films such as ‘The Fabulous Baker Boys’, ‘The Fisher King’, ‘Fearless’, ‘The Big Lebowski’, ‘Arlington Road’, ‘K-PAX’ and many more.

A selection of his best black and white photographs was published in 2003 in a book titled ‘Pictures’. The viewer can identify how Jeff Bridges uses the characteristic qualities of the Wide Lux camera in his own ‘Bridges Style’, which has become just as the legendary and unique as the roles he has played.

Jeff Bridges was born in 1949 in Los Angeles. At an early age, he and his brother Beau starred in TV series alongside his famous father Lloyd Bridges. His breakthrough role was in Peter Bogdanovich’s ‘The Last Picture Show’ 1971, for which he received an Academy Awards nomination as Best Supporting Actor.

Private view: Friday 3 September 2010, 18:00 – 22:00. Exhibition closes 29 October 2010.
