Galerie Schmidt & Handrup, Cologne, presents Andreas Schmidt full blast with his Psycho Flora

This Friday, 30 October at 8pm, Andreas Hirsch will present his "TreeSpeedMusic" performance at the "Psycho Flora" exhibition, at  Schmidt & Handrup Gallery and would like to invite GoSee News readers to join him.

With curious instruments such as the “Palmonika“, an electrified palm leaf, or the “singing walking stick” Andreas creates a visual and sound experience. Loop based pieces are developed by combining live sampling, prepared rubber bands, mini ventilators and effects pedals, which are both influenced by minimal and abstract electronic music.

The Schmidt & Handrup Gallery is also very pleased to present Cologne-based artist Andreas Hirsch’s first solo show. His work is distinguished by an experimental and analytical application of photography, drawing, video and sound.

The exhibition is centred around images of exotic plants, which the artist added to by using light painting processes in the darkroom. These processes play an important part: one-offs are created through the “alchemistic” use of lamps and stencils, that are somewhere between analogue photography and photograms.

"Psycho Flora" is both the title of the programmatic definition of the exhibition, yet also emphasises the work’s psychedelic colours, as well as the artificiality of the situation, in which the depicted plants find themselves. In the nature that is depicted, man appears to be the architect and can place a species from one place to the next. He creates an artificial climate – then categorises, explores and observes it.


Andreas Hirsch, born in 1972, Leverkusen has been teaching at the Art Academy of Media in Cologne since 2008, where he studied Art and graduated under Professor Jürgen Klauke until 2001. His work has already been displayed in countless international exhibitions. He has been granted a scholarship by the Byrd Hoffman Foundation and Robert Wilson for studies at the Watermill Center in Long Island / NY in 2010.
