Gallery 39 for Contemporary Art, Tel Aviv : Michal Rubin - Chasing Light

Gallery 39 in Tel Aviv presents new works by Michal Rubin. Born in New York and raised in Israel, the photographer already drew attention to herself when she became a finalist in the photography competition “SCREENing – Internet goes Print” (info on SCREENing 09 will follow shortly).

Her new works are a continuation of her emotional portraits and the depiction of everyday situations from her homeland and travels.

“Rubin’s photographs, made during the period from 2001 until recently, focus on life around her, the places she lives in or visits, her friends, her family as well as unfamiliar grounds. However, unlike current trends in contemporary photography, Rubin does not shy away from emotion, quite the opposite; she embraces it to create her own unique, autobiographical story.

Rubin’s work exudes life and vibrancy. Looking at the images, I felt alive. It took a while before I understood the effect it had on me. It lingers on. Deceptively simple, these intimate images convey a variety of moods portraying ordinary daily life in its complexity: full of sadness, joy, loneliness or passion.

Rays of light typically set through Rubin’s eye. She has a magical way of observing light, using it seductively, like a warm brush coloring the frame vividly. In the image 'olive oil and vinegar' for instance, the oil seems like light morphing into something else: the sun perhaps, or an eye looking out.

Rubin often reminds us of what we can spot, but are not always able to see. Her images challenge us to focus our attention and find the naiveté and compassion she feels towards friends as well as towards strangers, children or adults; animals, trees, even the sight of blue skies. There is not a bit of cynicism here, no pretense. Her work is simply human.” Elinor Carucci

Michal studied photography from 1998-2002 at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her images have been exhibited at the Andrea Meislin Gallery, New York and were displayed at Bridge Art Fair, London, as well as at an auction at Christie’s.

The exhibition will run until 6 June 2009. GoSee presents a selections of her work.
