Good Americans, when they die, go to Paris - the ’History of The White World’ by Joel-Peter Witkin

The Baudoin Lebon Gallery in Paris presents the 'History of the White World' exhibition until the 19th of May; a collection of contemporary photography taken from the peculiar visual cosmos that is the universe of Joel-Peter Witkin.

Joel-Peter (born in New York) embarks on his very own voyage of discovery into the history of the Occident – the History of the White World.

His motifs are a cocktail of bible quotes, ancient mythology, pictures taken from the common pool of wisdom – think philosophy, literature, polemics – and create a panopticon with a very distinct taste.

He grew up as the son to a Jewish father and mother, who was actually of Roman-Catholic faith. His parents gave it their best shot but eventually decided to part ways due to irreconcilable differences.

Joel-Peter Witkin lives and works Albuquerque, New-Mexico. To say he lives at the boundaries of the White World might be pushing it … ?
