GoSee presents : Shadi Ghadirian - a photographer from Iran at Aeroplastics Contemporary, Brussels

Aeroplastics Contemporary presents Persian photographer Shadi Ghadirian’s first monograph. In 2001, she arose public interest for the first time with her Qajar and Like Everyday series. The artist has been dealing with the conflict between tradition and modernity ever since, as well as the female's role in a society that is predominated by masculine stereotypes.

Since the sixties, Persia has been represented at the Venice Biennial. Unfortunately, this ceased to happen due to the revolution and their flag was first flown again in 2003. In an odd twist of fate, the year 2003 is synonymous for the conservatives' return to power, following a period which gave cause to a wee bit of hope that the country might loosen up a bit, human rights might be respected and that women's role in a Muslim society might be revaluated.

The “Like Everyday” series (Domestic Life) confronts us with completely veiled women and domestic objects. While this could easily be understood as a criticism of the cover-up imperative – it is supposed to point out the “universal” relationship between the object and the female in society. The series “West by East” on the other hand toys with fashion's attributes – literally erasing the forbidden body parts (including haircuts) visible in the photograph.

The “Qajar” series alludes to the dynasty (1794-1925) of the same name, in which the art of portrait photography had been introduced in Persia. Just like in the first year, women pose in decorations long forgotten, presenting accessories from the here and now - mountain bikes, radios, vacuum cleaners. A visual bridge between the worlds.     Ownership is a basic human need in all cultures of all times – one that not only the Catholic church is highly accustomed to.

More information regarding this fascinating photographer is available either directly via the gallery or on the internet.
