GoSee Tip ! Chandigarh 1956 : documentation of a visionary scheme - photographs by Ernst Scheidegger

In the mid 1950s, legendary architect Le Corbusier and his office worked on a master plan of and government buildings in the Indian city of Chandigarh. Ernst Scheidegger photographically documented the progress of the building works as well as the population’s living standards.

The ‘Chandigarh 1956’ book concept was realised using this material and wished to spread ideas of modern architecture and its social concerns. Nothing became of the visionary scheme of using different media to present architecture and urban development as intelligible to all – today it is more relevant than ever.

This book is the first to present the beautiful photographs that Scheidegger realised in Chandigarh. In addition to the atmospheric colour and black/white photos, the original «Chandigarh 1956» model was reproduced and commented on.

In an essay, art historian and Corbusier specialist Stanislaus von Moos explores the meaning of Scheidegger’s Chandigarh Project and builds bridges to contemporary discussions. Photo historian Verena Huber Nievergelt analyses Scheidegger’s photographs in the context of their date of origin.

Verena Huber Nievergelt, born 1971 in Winterthur, is an art and photography historian. She has carried out research and teaching in photograph theory, at institutions including Zürcher Hochschule der Künste and Universität Zürich.

Ernst Scheidegger was born in1923 and lives in Zurich, his images have been shown in countless exhibitions. He was presented with the "Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres" medal of the French Republic and the City of Zurich awarded him the Heinrich-Wölfflin Medal in 2003.
