GoSee Tip : so close to the cold - Pascal Fellonneaus 'Cold Cold Ground', exhibition at final Galleri Malmö

‘It’s oh so quiet..., it’s oh so still…’ Björk famously sung on her colourful ‘Post’ album in 1995. Spike Jones’ appropriate music video was intentionally produced in a madly wound up fashion and was rather removed from the idea of Iceland in terms of atmosphere.

In his ‘Cold Cold Ground’ series, Pascal Fellonneau showcases what is happening on the island, sometimes even far from the capital of Reykjavik. It is rather chilly up there, close to the polar circle, and quiet: ‘Oh so quiet’, but not colourless by any account.

The French photographer presents his picture series during the South Sweden Photography Biennial at the Final Galleri in Malmö; the first time that his works are being shown in Scandinavia.

Pascal photographed in and around the northern seaport of Akureyri in between 2003 and 2005, which is the fourth biggest town on the island, yet rather isolated due to its site. Pascal’s pictures are compositions of colours and landscape impressions and it is hard to tell apart the daytime from the night most of the time.

Streets and houses suggest the presence of life, yet his pictures are always devoid of souls and are seemingly forlorn. He describes the cold and silence through his photographs, which is part of the deal of living in Iceland.

Pascal Fellonnaeu lives and works in Bordeaux. His works have already been featured in international exhibitions, including the Athens Photo Festival, the Ilka Bree Gallery Bordeaux as well as in galleries in Stuttgart and Lyon. His clients include Elle, The Guardian, Le Figaro Magazine and Totem Total.
