GoSee Tip : Duesseldorf Photo Weekend. The NRW-Forum presents 'State of the Art Photography' - the colourful world of photography in an exhibition and book
To celebrate the opening of 'State of the Art Photography', the NRW Forum Düsseldorf will kick off Duesseldorf Photo Weekend on the 4th of February. This Saturday, Düsseldorf galleries and institutions will host and present photography exhibitions.
Despite the trends towards digitalisation, the opposite means of creating an analogue image is and remains a popular alternative. Aesthetics and manners of composition change, migration and globalisation are new hot topics. Photographers of today have a different perspective on the history of photography and are open towards new forms of presentation, for installations and a permutation of media and materials.
“The future does not lie in pure photography, but in pure art”, explains Andreas Gursky, member of the curator team, which also includes Thomas Seelig, Andréa Holzherr, F.C. Gundlach, Thomas Weski, Udo Kittelmann and Werner Lippert.
Hence, during the review of the 40 positions, a definite renaissance of traditional topics in photography, such as the landscape or the portrait became distinctively apparent. For example the landscape pictures by Alex Grein, who creates her pictures from visual fragments found on the Internet.
Another observation is the 'aesthetic of the scientific perspective'. Several approaches can almost be called scientific, such as researching the origin of mankind or the biographies of youth, both of which are of high documentary value.
Sanna Kannisto's works for example are biological examinations, Mikhael Subotzky and Patrick Waterhouse explore the residential tower 'Ponte City', an icon in the Johannesburg skyline, while Olaf Otto Becker deals with the traces left in the soil and landscape by the ever-growing overpopulation of this planet.
Those who won't be able to make it to Düsseldorf, should consider the picture book of the same name, published by Feymedia. It features the 41 international photographers on six pages respectively, including a biography and bibliography. The 264-page strong book will be released as a bilingual hardcover publication. A must-have for everyone who wants to know what the talk of the town will be in the world of art and photography tomorrow.
