GoSee Tip The Photographers' Gallery, London : The Family and the Land - Sally Mann

Photographer Sally Mann, born Sally Turner Munger, in 1951, Lexington, USA, first caught the public eye with her ‘Immediate Family (1984 – 94)’ project. The series of intimate portraits of her three very young children Emmett, Jessie and Virginia was met with a wide echo in the art world.

The photos were realised over ten years around her home base of Virginia and depict the everyday trust between mother and child. The images also show her children in the nude – which cause quite a stir in the United States, including accusations of child pornography.

The TIMES crowned her ‘America’s Best Photographer’ in 2001 and commented on the nude debate : "Mann recorded a combination of spontaneous and carefully arranged moments of childhood repose and revealingly — sometimes unnervingly — imaginative play. What the outraged critics of her child nudes failed to grant was the patent devotion involved throughout the project and the delighted complicity of her son and daughters in so many of the solemn or playful events. No other collection of family photographs is remotely like it, in both its naked candour and the fervour of its maternal curiosity and care."

Her focus on portrait photography gradually switched to still life and landscapes. The ‘Deep South (1996 – 98)’ series documents, amongst others, the most important locations of the American Civil War. They were realised using everyday cameras and their development processes, which presents the viewer with an illusion of time and spaces of time.

The latest series in the ‘What Remains (2000-04)’ exhibition with portraits sees Sally’s work come full circle.

The Family and the Land: Sally Mann at The Photographers’ Gallery presents a selection of the works from the touring exhibition, which was realised in a collaboration between Sally and Hasse Persson, Director of Borås Museum of Modern Art, Sweden. It is Sally's first and long overdue solo show in United Kingdom.
