Groninger Museum: Whispering Waters exhibition by Danielle Kwaaitaal

A new series of underwater photographs by Dutch visual artist Danielle Kwaaitaal is being presented in the ‘Green Room’ of the Groninger Museum in Holland. The exhibition, entitled “Whispering Waters” can be viewed from 14 March until 31 May, 2009. The dresses worn by the models were designed especially by fashion designer Mada van Gaans.

The Whispering Waters exhibition is a beautiful collection of images featuring nymph-like catwalk models and synchronised swimmers in various underwater poses, who performed a special choreography for the shoot.

Danielle Kwaaitaal focuses on the significance of being a woman in her work and is fascinated by the ideal of beauty in both a human and an artistic sense. The underlying message in her images is that fashion affects the way woman see themselves and others, so in Whispering Waters the woman is searching for her identity, but finds herself in dark isolation. This suggests that “the present tyranny of the fashion and beauty industry do not contribute to the advancement of the self, but rather to its destruction”.

This new series is a continuation of the artist’s fascination for water reflected in a previous series, ‘Bubbling’ (1994), which is also included in this exhibition.

Mada van Gaans was the ideal choice to design the ‘underwater’ style dresses, as her collections are often inspired by myths around female figures, elements out of nature and influences from other cultures. “Her virtuoso use of materials and exceptional sense of colour are perfectly in keeping with the image that is evoked, in which sharp contours and silk -smooth colour transitions go hand in hand,” says Kwaaitaal.

A must-see for any underwater fans. But if you can't make it to Holland by 31 May, you’ll have to make the most of our sneak preview …
