Helsinki School - group exhibition - 21 works by 11 Finnish artists in Zurich

With 21 works by eleven different artists, the Chrisophe Guye Galerie is looking forward to presenting a rich selection of the most exciting photographs to come out of one of the most respected contemporary movements in photography – The Helsinki School, for the first time in Switzerland.

The ‘Helsinki School’ cannot be described to have a distinct style, nationality or formal quality. The artists are primarily conceptual artists who use a camera or light sensitive material to express their artistic nature. The location, so close to the polar circle is another unique aspect of the group, with its unusual lighting conditions and a social culture that pervades through long days and nights.

Many internationally established artists, all former students or teachers at the Aalto University School of Art and Design (formerly University of Art and Design Helsinki), flocked to each other over the years and founded the much-celebrated ‘Helsinki School’ – Group. The ‘Helsinki School’ took its first steps in the 1990s; a mere teaching project back then by the professional studies director Timothy Persons.

With the Helsinki School exhibition, the Christopher Guye Galerie looks forward to presenting the movement in Switzerland for the first time ever.

It is impossible to categorise the Helsinki School by means of theme, material, genre or style. The artists are connected by a love of innovative concepts and techniques as well as formal diversity, a specific way of approaching photography as an art form.

Photography became one of the most successful branches of the Finnish cultural export and the Helsinki School became the arguably most famous art movement to ever come from Finland. Aalto Univeristy School graduates showcase their pictures all over world, such as in the current exhibition Touching Dreams at the National Museum of Photography in Copenhagen. At the moment, the Helsinki School consists of approximately 40 artists, eleven of which are featured in the exhibition.

While some of these artists already enjoy international fame – such as Ola Kolehmainen, Jyrki Parantainen Nanna Hänninen (whose works are part of the Fotomuseum Winterthur collection), Sandra Kantanen, Niko Luoma and Riitta Päiväläinen – the exhibition also casts an eye on the next, upcoming generation of young Finnish photography talents, who are already causing lots of buzz: Jaana Maijala or Anni Leppälä and Susanna Majuri, both of whom were present during the Plattform 2009 Fotomuseum. Plus Wilma Hurskainen and Nelli Palomäki, who were both part of the Plattform 2010, where the latter even one an award.

The never before shown combination of these eleven artists and their works, as different as they may be when it comes to visuals and technique, creates a magical, almost surreal artistic body.

The Aalto University School, the largest Design University in Scandinavia, teaches design, film, new media, audiovisual communication, art history and fine arts. Since its founding in 1871, named School of Arts and Crafts back then, the school has become one of the most dynamic and exciting universities for its special subject(s) and is considered one of the most interesting ‘breeding grounds’ for photography in Europe.
