Japanese views of the Post War period. Shomei Tomatsu & Daido Moriyama at the Michael Hoppen Gallery, London

In Japan, the works of Shomei Tomatsu and Daido Moriyama are considered giants of the post-war world of photography. The photographs tend to vary stylistically, but not when it comes to their emotional profoundness. Their pictures broach out the issues of love, pain and fear, with equal amounts of energy, passion and subtle brilliancy distributed between them. For the first time, the two photographers are being exhibited side by side in the United Kingdom.

77 years old, Tomatsu has seen and photographed quite a lot. He cast a relentless eye on the aftermath of the atomic attack on Nagasaki, visually discussed the economic boom Japan went through in the 1960s and illustrated the influence of American military on Okinawa pop culture.

Daido Moriyama's intuitive works are unsettling through their rough texture – gritty reflections of the advance of social classes after American World War II. In the beginnings, his works were dark and mysterious. The 1980s witnessed an amplification of his perspective, more brightness and freshness. An assortment of his classic images as well as new motifs from his travels in Hawaii over the last few years are on show.

What catches the eye's attention is the harshness and immediate language of both artists' pictures. They simply depict it as it is and not what they wish it would be. Subtleties included. The Michael Hoppen Gallery will be showing the black & white photographs until 9 and respectively 10 October 2010.
