Johan van der Keuken and his love of movement in photography - exhibition at the Foam Museum of Photography, Amsterdam

On 14 July, 1958, music filled the Parisian Ile Saint-Louis, women in colourful clothes flocked to the place, couples danced, old, young, parents strolled by with their small children, friends laughed amongst each other. It was a national holiday. Johan van der Keuken, armed with his trusty camera, joined in the fun and took pictures.

The Foam Museum of Photography now presents previously unpublished pictures from this very series. The exhibition ‘Pictorial Narratives’ exemplifies Keuken's Talent, to capture movement in a freeze image. Also, it adds further material, which will be shown in an exhibition for the first time.

Van der Keuken had always been keen to capture movement in imagery. He experimented with pictorial series, connected them and thus created picture stories. Moreover, he discovered how photocomposition could accelerate the movement in his pictures and as such give new meaning to them.

As a special treat, the atmosphere of a ballroom will be recreated, in which Van der Keuken's pictures appear to be swirling and dancing around the visitor.

Johan van der Keuken was born in 1939 in Amsterdam and is an internationally renowned documentary filmmaker and photographer. He owes his exceptional reputation to his complex montage technique as well as his substantial visual language. In 2001, the Dutchman succumbed to cancer, which he had previously discussed within a film.

The exhibition will be accompanied by ‘Quatorze Juillet’, a publication that features, among other things, unpublished pictures from the photographer / director's early days.
