Jules Spinatsch : Snow Management ! The mountain as a stage - glowing Alps at midnight

In the spirit of the season, Swiss artist Jules Spinatsch (*1964, Davos) presents fascinating pictures from his long running project Snow Management in his first ever monographic exhibition in Austria. The exhibition tells of the mountain as a stage, places of yearning and their commercialisation. Through tricks of light, marketing specialists and machines transform the night into a spectacle. It is by this light, that the photographer captures his pictures and videos.

Jules Spinatsch's elaborate study Snow Management (2003 – 2007) eagerly examines the commercial ongoings at the leisure arena that is the Alpine area and skilfully dodges established clichés: Be it coated snow cannons, gargantuan slope vehicles or advertising posters. The photograph keeps merging the illusion as well as the apparatus it originates from.

The event night in Serfaus thus serves as an impressive example of how the mountains are utilised as a stage and dive into an indent dramaturgy of bombastic light design through floodlight. One motif shows the silhouette of the sailing ship ‘Endurance’, of the famous, yet unlucky Arctic explorer Ernest Shackleton from 1916. The expedition was full-heartedly financed by the British Kingdom and hence the possibility of an all-encompassing documentation was secured. The image, which is projected onto the mountain slope is the negative of the foundering ‘Endurance’.

Jules Spinatsch has been familiar with the idea of tourism and winter sports since childhood. He spent the first seven years of his life on the Jakobshorn at his parents' mountain restaurant. The impacts of global market relations on the region, as well as the commercialisation of the snow are deliberate focuses of his work.

By now, Jules Spinatsch belongs to the most popular photographers of his generation: His works have been shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and at Haus der Kunst in Munich. His works are housed in important collections. Art house Zug recently dedicated a solo exhibition to him.
