Mikael Kennedy Exhibition : THE WINE DARK SEA at Melanie Flood Projects

Melanie Flood Projects presents “The Wine Dark Sea” from Mikael Kennedy’s The Odysseus Series, on show from 9 July onwards.

The title of the series, “The Wine Dark Sea,” refers to the passage in Homer’s epic tale in which Odysseus sits by the shore, captive of the goddess Calypso, longing to return home to his family and his land. However, just to clear things up, the images represented in this series are American coastlines photographed between 2006 and 2009.

In Mikael's own words : “The American frontier itself, once viewed as the wild west and the new world, is no longer viewed as uncharted territory or undiscovered land”. His Odyssey is a very conscious journey through today’s America, on the search for a new vision of a land, somewhere between recession and euphoria, on the look out for a new way of global cooperative being.

The photographs are displayed in rough wood frames, alongside pieces the photographer collected on his travels. Thus Mikael takes over the whole space, making it his own, expanding the perspectives beyond the borders of the photos, and in doing so, creates his own visual cosmos.
