Phillips de Pury & Company, London : proudly presents Tierney Gearon

Phillips de Pury & Company is proud to announce an exhibition of new work by the photographer,Tierney Gearon, on view until January 28. This exhibition will present for the first time a series of works using double exposure. This use of double exposure is a new process for the artist.

With no retouching or post work, Tierney Gearon’s large scale photographs are contrived through the more classic mechanism of double exposure in camera. Each photograph has been composed by carefully combining two of Tierney’s images whose compositions and themes act as counterpoints to each other, as juxtapositions: interior space and wilderness; youth and old age; solitude and companionship. The artist, her children and friends are the characters staged against the breathtaking backdrop of landscapes in South Africa, India, Italy to upstate New York and the artist’s home in Los Angeles. Individually, each of the two layered images often seem banal, but the masterful combining of the images creates “odd” scenes, which could be premonitions or Déjà vu.

Tierney says of her Inspiration : "In May 2006 my friend Cary Leitzes introduced me to Simon de Pury. I showed him the book steidldangin had just published, “Daddy, where are you?” that documents my family visiting my mother at her home for the last ten years. Simon was very touched by the images and immediately asked me to do a show. At the time I was working on a project I started five years before – nude self portraits. Then things started to develop. Through talking with my steidldangin publisher Pascal Dangin, who inspired me to double expose my images by taking pictures of myself, then exposing them on top of whatever I wanted. I felt incredibly stimulated and creatively challenged by this idea and knew that I could do something amazing and push my images a step further. This creative explosion inside me was the beginning of the double exposure project."

This exhibition consists of 40 images and is her first solo show in London. Tierney’s work was last show in Europe in 2001 when a significant selection of her photographs were included in Charles Saatchi’s groundbreaking “I Am Camera” exhibition.
