PPOW Gallery, New York : Melanie Bonajo - Furniture Bondage

Some how these photos recall the days of door to door vacuum cleaner salesmen, who offered promising domestic helpers and spare parts to hard working housewives and their husbands. But there is also a touch of Araki, note the bondage techniques with which Melanie Bonajo artfully ties irons and other household goods to naked women.

The series was realized in 2007, but the PPOW Gallery in New York is pleased to now host the first solo exhibition of the Dutch artist, Melanie Bonajo. With “Thrown down from Heaven“ the artist expresses the relationships that human beings have with the environment, both private and public, and the desire to create harmony within this.

Her exhibition stems from elementary questions: what do we need to add to ourselves until we become complete, happy, satisfied or safe?! Bonajo believes that our identification with material obsession blocks the ability for a deeper sensibility; this includes not only objects but also immaterial elements such as facts, information, data, and visual input.

The series depicts nudes and household objects, which become a fusion of the individual and the material, and serve as a hybrid that expresses our modern age.

Her pictures have been exhibited at renowned international institutions and have been featured in magazines such as Capricious, Foam-magazine, Livraison and Famous Magazine. She was the winner of the Dutch Young Artist Award 2003, and winner of the Bookprice Pup Award 2007. Her new work, a collaborative project with Emmeline de Mooij, was displayed at the Hyères Photography and Fashion Festival.

Those of you that wish to see more of her delightfully cunning pieces, should get your hands on a copy of  "I have a room with everything", a book that covers her works from 1995 until 2005, published by Capricious Publsihing.
