Sympathisanten by Gina Lee Felber - animal figures as alter egos at Julia Garnatz, Cologne

Gina Lee Felber’s cute 'Sympathisanten' large-format paper creations come across as equally alluring and disturbing. By implementing a verre églomisé technique for the black tempera paintings, Gina has given them a black & white and almost photographic aesthetic.

In her newest range of works, the artist exploits a new genre: animal pictures. Yet, instead of animals in nature, the series features animal depictions: carousel animals, toy animals or decorative animals.

We won't even attempt to describe the exhibition in better words than the gallerist herself: “Felber's animal pictures are not about animals per se, but people. The animal picture is an alter ego, a second existence, a shadow. It contains information about the creator or owner, their desires and needs. Moving beyond notions of sentimentality, which is usually associated with all things 'animal', they are but projections of the human conditions.

Animals have been said to possess exceptional abilities for a long time in cultural history. In many cultures, they are used to embody the divine or serve as a symbol of the ruling power. In the western world and its culture, some animals are even considered mankind's best friend. They are received as friendly – not to Felber however, in the artist's case it's about 'people, who publicly state their alignment with specific ideas, ideologies or its representatives.'

Felber's animals are not only sympathisers bearing a meaning, but also relics of a long-forgotten interpretation, transformed into a new sphere of existence. An existence that exists for its own sake, autonomous, independent and yet, still associated with an identifiable group of sympathisers. Sympathisers of their own group and ideology. The idea of an end in itself comes full circle. Being for the sake of being.”

A small publication with an essay by Uta M. Reindl accompanies the exhibition.
