"I am a Cape Town born photographer, grew up on the Cape Flats, a place where you naturally become street smart.
I finished school at the age of 17 and immediately left for London. It was my first time on an airplane and my first time traveling abroad. I had no idea what I was getting myself into but I did it anyway. Being an only child this was hard for my parents to deal with. I saved up and bought myself a happy snap camera and started firing away.
I traveled to the Caribbean and will never forget the night I saw a photographer setting up his camera and tripod to photograph one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen. I thought that looks cool and decided to take a few of my own shots. I processed my film back in London, looked through my snapshots and there was the amazing sunset once again. That was the day I said to myself You need to learn how to do this properly.
I moved back to Cape Town and studied photography at the Peninsula Technikon in Bellville. I studied for three years. In my final year, after a two day internship, I was head hunted by Independent Newspapers, a local media house.
The 5 years I spent there afforded me the best training I could ever have asked for. I’ve been working professionally for the past 7 years and let’s just say I don’t take snapshots anymore. I am currently working with the 21 Icons Team. "
Noch genau 10 Tage Zeit sich ein Bild von Gary's Bildern in Kapstadt zu machen. Gut, das wir einige hier auf GoSee ein wenig länger präsentieren dürfen.
