The New Gypsies von Iain McKell - Free as the wind. Modern nomads in the UK

They live in horse wagons and tents, they chose to go down the path of an alternative lifestyle, beyond the Western and newfound Eastern capitalism. The ‘New Gypsies’ wander through Great Britain like modern nomads. Iain McKell spent the last ten years documenting the gypsies and lived with some of them. The Prestel Verlag published a photo book of his pictures.

The travellers are made-up of families of all ages, old punks, stemming from the counter-culture of the ‘60s and ‘70s, as well as the 1990s rave scene. They do not share an ethnological origin, spirituality or in terms of political point of view. They are bound by an ideal, their faith in the possibility of living life in a different way.

The photographer toys with the tradition of documentary photography in his pictures. He circumnavigates the typical visual attributes and instead allows his background as a fashion photographer to influence the motifs.

The results are awash with romantic colour palettes, they are touching portraits and captured in a magical picture book that is all about an autonomous community.

Iain McKell is a London-based photographer who is best known for his work with subcultures. He photographs various music and fashion scenes and his portfolio is filled with such illustrious names as i-D, The Face and L’Uomo Vogue.

His documentation of the Punk and New Wave ‘Blitz Kids’ scene in London in the 1970s and 1980s influenced an entire generation of fashion photographers.
