Through the Looking Brain - Zellweger Luwa AG, Switzerland's photo collection on show in the Rhineland

Kunstmuseum Bonn presents ‘THROUGH THE LOOKING BRAIN’ – the internationally renowned, yet previously unexhibited photography collection of the Schweizer Zellweger Luwa AG.

In terms of context, the collection – although independent when it comes to its content – is associated with Hans und Walter Bechteler, who already displayed art at their company Luwa AG as early as the 1950s. Walter Bechtler also established a foundation in 1955, to support art in the public sphere, which set many important and vital impulses in the world of Swiss art up to this day.

Brothers Hans C. and Walter A. Bechtler founded the Luwa AG in 1935 in Zurich. The goal was the manufacturing and installation of automatic heaters, air conditioning and ventilation systems. The name Luwa is made up of the first syllable of the German word for air and warmth (Luft and Wärme) respectively. After the Second World War, Luwa founded subsidiaries and representations in Europe, the Far East, South-East Asia, the Middle East and South America.

The photography collection was created due to an initiative by the sons Ruedi and Thomas Bechtler in 1990 (supported by Brice Curinger, curator at the Kunsthaus Zurich) and has developed into one of the most complete collections when it comes to conceptual photography.

Its spectrum ranges from the 1970s to the present day and encompasses major works and centrepiece groups by John Baldessari, Stan Douglas, Richard Prince, Jeff Wall and Hiroshi Sugimoto to Bernd and Hilla Becher, Sigmar Polke, Imi Knoebel, Martin Kippenberger, Thomas Ruff and Andreas Gursky to Fischli/Weiss, Roman Signer, Ken Lum and Gabriel Orozco.

Hence, the collection focuses on one of the core aspects within history of photography’s long way of becoming an actual and independent art form and offers a glimpse into virtually unseen co-relations between various works.

The exhibition will also be on show at the Kunstmuseum St.Gallen subsequently. An elaborate catalogue with texts by Stephan Berg, Konrad Bitterli, David Campany, Stefan Gronert and Dora Imhof for the price of 39,80 Euros will be published in time for the exhibition.
