UPdate 12. Warm Up at Wagner + Partner Gallery, Berlin plus Agent Provocateur – a temporary Art Happening with Natascha Stellmach

The official unofficial opening of the UPdate 12 will take place on Thursday evening, October 25 at the Wagner + Partner Gallery on the beautiful and architecturally unique Karl-Marx-Allee.

The gallery’s international programme focuses on painting and installation as well as contemporary photo art, by such illustrious artists as Thomas Wrede, Miklos Gaal, Ilkka Halso and Erwin Olaf. It offers the ideal GoSee environment for a large reunion and meet and greet of the UPdate exhibitors, SCREENings judges and their and our friends.

Natascha Stellmach recently hosted her ‘Agent Provocateur’ happening in the gallery. The artist provided visitors with customised temporary tattoo statements dealing with the role of art in contemporary society.

The visitor was encouraged to slip into the role of an ‘Agent Provocateur’ for the evening and to actively question values and ethics in contemporary art.

The event was a continuation of her scandalous project on Curt Cobain’s ashes – and the resulting Internet comments from all over the world, which she has been working with.

‘Agent Provocateur’ premiered in Miami at the PULSE art fair in 2011. It was later exhibited at the Anna Pappas Gallery in Melbourne and will be continued on August 3, 2012 at the Documenta in Kassel.

GoSee will shortly present the outcome of the evening’s events. As a teaser we have attached an extract of her book ‘It is Black in Here’, a combination of photography, film and installations from several years.

Amy Barrett-Lennard, Director, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, Australia comments ‘the vulnerability of truth, the darkness of the human condition and our fleeting insignificance in the grand scheme of things are recurring concerns for Natascha Stellmach. Her works at first appear delicate and personal, familiarly archival even, yet they soon take us into dark terrain – violence, war, suicide, death. Through a range of media encompassing film, photography, prose and installation, she invites us to share in a taboo, an unspeakable subject around which she has built a narrative. These tales are supported, it seems, by documentary evidence, yet are deliberately confusing in their authenticity. We are presented with the photograph of a roadside memorial, Curt Cobain’s ashes rolled in a joint. We read the accompanying text and feel as if we are sharing an intimate, holy moment.’

Wagner + Partner Gallery was founded in 2008 by Margret Uhrmeister and Cai Wagner and is located on Berlin’s historical Karl-Marx-Allee. They specialise in contemporary photography and painting.
