Vera Mercer's ‘Portraits and Still Lifes’ in Berlin and Hamburg - dinner is served with Flora and Fauna

Following her marriage to Daniel Spoerri, Vera Mercer became a part of the Parisian artist Avant-Garde of the early 1960s. She portrayed Marcel Duchamp and Robert Filliou, Niki de Saint-Phalle, Jean Tinguely and regularly captured Spoerri too. Whilst making these portraits she also photographed the old Parisian market halls just before their demolition.

This was the first time she encountered the subject, which was to preoccupy her work to this very day: food such as fruit and vegetables, meat and fish as a whole or as cuts – and the later arrangement in the studio as well as the preparation and eating in restaurants.

The photographer’s flowers, fruits and animal still lifes are separate from contemporary art trends, indeed they rather recall connections to classic art history.

Some of her still lifes go towards the absurd and surreal through the seemingly extreme scale of the objects. Sometimes the spatial composition of the objects is so confusing that the foreground and background can no longer be clearly identified.

Fresh vegetables and fish, half withered flowers and animal heads, all at various stages of transience coexist beside one another. Classic vanitas motifs such as skulls and half burnt candles symbolically remind us of our own mortality.

‘Portraits and Still Lifes’ in Berlin is Vera Mercer’s first solo show in Germany. The beautiful book with opulently delicious images is published by Kehrer Verlag and is an absolute must-have for every photography fan’s bookshelf.

Several works from her still life series are also currently on show at the THREE! Group exhibition, at Flo Peters Gallery, Hamburg. Her stills are on display alongside photos by Christopher Markos and Paul Solberg.
