From Memphis to Wyoming to Nebraska - Christian Patterson’s series ‘Sound Affects’ and ‘Redheaded Peckerwood’ on display in Hamburg

‘Sound Affects’ created in 2005 is a study of Memphis, Tennessee, as a musical place. Memphis, ‘Birthplace of Rock'n'Roll’, but also ‘Home of the Blues’ appears to be a visual melody made out of light and colour.

The series documents musical locations, the history, the presence and the influence of music on the city, the musicality of the every day. With this work, Christian Patterson made his first international appearance as a photo artist.

REDHEADED PECKERWOOD, 2011 published and met with euphoric international critical acclaim, is a series of objects, documents and photographs based on a true, tragic story. The story of two teenagers, Charles Starkweather and Carol Ann Fugate, who during a three-day killing spree in 1958 had murdered 11 people before being arrested, is deeply encoded in the American collective memory.

Terrence Mallick's ‘Badlands’ and Oliver Stone's ‘Natural Born Killers’ were both based on their story. Christian Patterson followed the route the two teenagers took through Wyoming and Nebraska, immersed himself in police archives, spoke to witnesses and created a series of photographs, found objects, drawings and documents, creating what Christian Patterson describes as ‘a visual crime dossier filled with cues and clues – a mystery to be solved’.

The book to the series was published by Mack Books, London in 2011. It received worldwide acclaim and was voted one of the Best Photobooks of 2011 by The New York Times, The Guardian, London and Le Monde, Paris. ‘Redheaded Peckerwood’ also received the prestigious Book Author Award 2012 at the Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles. The series was last exhibited by the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago.

Info : Christian Patterson (b. 1972 in Font du Lac, Wisconsin) lives in Brooklyn, New York. His work is collected and exhibited internationally. His first monograph, Sound Affects, was published in 2008. His second monograph, Redheaded Peckerwood, was published by MACK in 2011 to international critical acclaim, nominated for the 2012 Kraszna-Krausz Book Awards and won the prestigious 2012 Recontres d’Arles Author Book Award.
