Sandra Ackermann : the woman in the mirror - graphic picture elements with the potential for critical interpretation

Sandra Ackermann creates controlled picture elements which culminate to form a rather poetic whole, as well as the potential for critical interpretation. Her graphic, almost illustrated paintings present the stylisation of forms and motifs, often including young women, without shying away from reality.

The presented images depict cool, distanced heroines, usually in combination with objects from our everyday culture. Sandra sees her pictures as a mirror “pretty like advertising, but more real on an emotional level, they have less purpose as they are only there to visualise how I feel in the world I live in”.

The artist lives and works in Germany and Great Britain. She studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt, as well as in London, received various scholarships and won the Dr. Rolf Seisser Prize. Her pieces have travelled all over Germany, and even to Paris.

Unfortunately there isn’t an exhibition of her work at the moment. However, you could always order the 66 page catalogue of Sandra Ackermann’s work, with a highly insightful introduction by Thomas W. Kuhn. Order it for  20 Euro through the Voss Gallery.

Additional pictures and illustrations can be admired on her website, which will also keep you posted on upcoming exhibitions.
