Stina Persson - 'Perfectly Flawed' : the beauty of imperfection. Gallery Hanahou, New York, presents Stina's unretouched dreams on paper

When a sea of watercolours flows into a fashionable image, then Stina Persson was probably orchestrating the brush that created it. Her style is unmistakably beautiful and renowned, and not just since her illustrations for Replay Perfumes.

The Stockholm-based artist has been working as a successful illustrator for over ten years. She conforms to trends of narrowing hips and making skin appear ever-smoother, she adapts her work and changes her signature watercolours to individually tailor to a client’s needs. Her edges have gradually become cleaner, features more defined, and the painterly more photographic.

She has now abandoned her digital safety net to rediscover flawed beauty. The work in her solo show is unaltered and visualises her response to the abundance of perfect images that surround us. ‘Perfectly Flawed’ is bursting with edges and beautiful imperfections.

So, what happens when we step back and allow imperfections to re-enter our lives: make room for the handmade, the wonky, the aesthetic that is inspired by the naturalness of the 70s, when botox didn’t influence or worry the minds and creased foreheads of society?

‘Perfectly flawed’ isn’t scanned, retouched or digitally reworked. The result is a series of 30 works on paper. Very pure. Natural. And beautiful.

Stina Persson studied Fine Art and Fashion Illustration in Italy and graduated in Illustration at Pratt Institute in New York. She is renowned for her watercolours and illustrations and her client list has grown to include Sony Music, Absolut Vodka and Bloomingdale’s.
