A&W designer of the year 2013, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, visiting Cologne for the furniture fair, at the MCA in Chicago and bound by Phaidon

Once again Cologne is attracting design lovers, trendsetters and furniture specialists. IMM Cologne, the world’s largest furniture trade fair is in town and featuring more than 1250 companies from 50 countries. And this year A&W Architektur & Wohnen, Germany’s style magazine for living, design and architecture, announce their designers of the year: brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec share the A&W 2013 designer of the year award.

They received the award on 13 January 2013 on COLOGNE DESIGN NIGHT, on the evening before the IMM Cologne/Living Kitchen trade fair and the PASSAGEN Interior Design Week Cologne opened their respective doors. A&W Architektur & Wohnen have given out their A&W designer of the year award since 1997.

Editor in chief Barbara Friedrich commented in her speech: ‘Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec are the first brothers to jointly receive our award. They actually describe a ‘four-handed design’ to explain their way of working. Their non-verbal communication by means of drawings is fascinating. They draw over each other’s sketches and thus develop the product step-by-step. And though they are still quite young, they have already created a huge body of work in this way, including some design icons.’

Besides the award ceremony A&W Architektur & Wohnen put on an exhibition at the Kölnischen Kunstverein, curated by Ronan und Erwan Bouroullec that shows a cross-section of their work. Of course we’ve got some pictures for you! We are also pleased to report that this year part of the A&W team stayed in the marsil Apartment Hotel, just across from the exhibition space.

The magazine also published a beautiful still life spread featuring work by the two brothers in their current issue. Oliver SCHWARZWALD c/o KSTIEGEMEYER captured the designs in modern, subtle colours.

Ronan Bouroullec (born 1971) studied at the École Nationale Supérieure of Arts Décoratifs in Paris and worked as a lecturer at national art universities in Nancy and Saint-Etienne. His brother Erwan (born 1976) completed his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts de Cergy in 1998 and they subsequently founded their joint office in Paris. Their work aesthetic is quite minimal and simple; they often follow a molecular pattern, which enables a combination of disparate or single elements. Their clients include big name designers such as Kartell, Vitra, Ligne Roset, Kvadrat, Cappellini, Magis and Hans Grohe.

The designers presented two large exhibitions in 2012: ‘Album’ at Vitra Design Museum as well as ‘Bivouac’, a solo exhibition at Centre Pompidou Met, which is on show until 20 January 2013 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. Phaidon publishing house also published a monograph in the same year.
