Blut Bilder by Gerhard Richter, Xenia Hauser, Jonathan Meese & Co - a charity auction for cancer research and support

Can a picture cure cancer? Not exactly. Still, a picture in a charity auction can make a considerable contribution to that effect. Gathering donations and supporting research. For the extension of the station for bone marrow transplantation at University Clinic, Hamburg-Eppendorf, the German Cancer Research Foundation (Deutsche Krebshilfe), launched the ‘Blut Bilder’ (Blood Images) project.

24 artists confronted the topics of cancer, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation. Medical blood pictures served as templates, which were supposed to be freely interpreted. Thus, a collection of 34 unique artworks evolved, from (amongst others) Gerhard Richter, Xenia Hauser, Jonathan Meese and Udo Lindenberg.

Haspa, the Hamburg-based savings bank, which will be exhibiting the pieces in their Hamburg branch, supports the online auction.

For 35 years, the German Cancer Research Foundation has been acting swiftly and passionately whenever cancer patients and their relatives were in need of a helping hand. As of now, the University clinic in Hamburg-Eppendorf counts among the forefront centres of oncology. To make sure it stays that way, the president of the German Cancer Research Foundation, Prof. Dagmar Schipanski is happily looking forward to many visitors to the exhibition and many donations.

The eminent and unique pieces will be available for auction until the 13 December 2009.
