Fotomuseum Winterthur : Zoe Leonard
From 1 December until 17 February 2008, the photo museum in Witerthur will present work by American photographer and two time Participant to the Documenta - Zoe Leonard (*1961 in Liberty, New York). Over the past twenty years the artist has been picking up on themes such as the contrasts between nature and civilisation, the inner and outer worlds of gender roles. She doesnt deal with invention or imagination, instead she emphasises memory and taking a closer look.
Zoe, one of the founding members of the *Fierce Pussy* feminist collective
Caused a furore at the Documenta 9 in Kassel with her black and white photographs of female genitalia. In the 90s she photographed dead animals in Alaska and carried out studies of waterfalls and clouds. Zoe Leonard aims to capture traces of life before they disappear. In her work, the passionate archivist keeps her eye on normal subjects.
A book which accompanies the exhibition, is published by the Steidl Verlag, it is the first to present her entire collection from the 1970s onwards. The exhibitions curator is Urs Stahel and the private view will take place on Friday, 30 November 2007, 6-9pm (www.fotomuseum.ch).
