Halbe Rahmen : presents Werner Bartsch's 'Desert Bird' exhibition at Flo Peters Galerie, Hamburg

Airplanes are widely considered wonders of technology. They are so perfect and so flawless. They are the safest method of transport available and millions of people trust them with their lives on a daily basis.

Yet, even airplanes have an expiry date. At one point, the moment comes when the unrelenting process of decay can no longer be slowed down with maintenance. The planes have to make room for the next, even better generation.

Photographer Werner Bartsch's exhibition: 'Desert Bird' features motifs from the deserts of South-western USA. - the home of hundreds of decommissioned and scrapped airplanes. Former objects of amazement they are now abandoned in deadly silence, awaiting whatever the future holds for them, if anything. The fact that this will most likely not be something to rejoice about comes as no surprise.

Werner Bartsch (*1965) studied communication design with a focus on photography. After graduation, he commuted between New York and Berlin until he settled in his city of choice, Hamburg, as a freelance photographer in 1996.

He is a member of the Bund Freischaffender Fotodesigner (BFF) ( = union of freelance photo designers) and works on commissions for German and international magazines and agencies. His art projects always take him to the most diverse locations on this planet.

The pictures for the 'Desert Bird' series were produced on American airplane storage facilities, which are usually strictly inaccessible to the public, but opened their gates for this project.
