Paris Photo 2012 ... dark riders in the electronic cosmos, girl without fear and photo book signings are the new place to be. Some GoSee feedback

PARIS PHOTO 2012

Paris Photo already took place two weeks ago– but it’s not forgotten. One of the reasons for this was the legendary Grand Palais. After all those years it’s still so legendary that you have to be careful the grandness of it doesn’t overshadow your event.

But if you believe the organisers that certainly wasn’t the case at this year’s photo event. And the queues of photo enthusiasts in front of the Palais proved them right. We’ll just forget the little heating breakdown during the opening, which made the glass building feel very chilly very quickly, because the newly installed heating system is highly complicated. How very French to leave a modern heating system out of the plans for their recent renovation.

Thus we walked the corridors around what felt like 150 exhibitors, accompanied by the constant humming of the fans. The buyer was greeted with an international flood of pictures. And we found the programme rather… conservative.

We met Peking based fine art gallerist Meg Maggio, who just exhibited the solo show of SCREENings 2012 winner John Clang titled ‘Self Reflection’ in her space in Peking. The gallery owner and curator, who has been living in China for 20 years, showed work by the New York based artist at this event as well.

The refreshingly timeless work by Japanese photographer Rinko Kawauchi also appealed greatly to us, as did the fantastic scene by Kenneth Anger (galerie du jour agnès b.) and the wrongfully covertly placed rider in Daft Punk style by Patrick Bernatchez (current exhibition at the Galerie Bertrand Grimont) – was our personal highlight.

Karsten Greve’s stand stood out with the photographic documentary series ‘Afterlife’ by Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin – in general the cross-genre presentation of photography by some exhibitors was more impressive than classic photography.

Crowd pullers were definitely the countless book singings. In fact they proceeded to become a bit of a society event. The exhibiting publishers presented photography from all over the world in their programme, which was of course meant to boost book sales. That said photo books were one of the most important topics at this year’s Paris Photo.

Besides David Lynch, William Klein (1928 in New York), master of film and photography, came from the USA especially to meet his fans and pen some individual messages in his new photo book. If you can’t put a picture to the name, we recommend a look at his portfolio at Jackson Fine Art.

Martin Parr brought Aperture and his elaborately designed photo album ‘Life is a Beach’ along. Every picture was ‘inserted’ by hand just like in an old photo album. Beautiful.
