Pictoplasma : Prepare for Pictopia! Character Design & Animation Festival in Berlin

Once more, the Pictoplasma animation festival will take place from the 19th to the 21st of March in Berlin. The Pictoplasma Conference and the symposium are deal with the colourful world of character design. To mark the festival's opening, the very popular character walk (from 17th of March) will lead through galleries and project rooms all over Berlin-Mitte.

Streamlined depictions of characters have been revolutionising our visual culture since the millennium. Pictograms with lively features experience a viral circulation in digital media, advertising and the arts. Character Design playfully remixes and samples various sources such as pop culture, folklore, market logos and comic, without submitting to one or the other genre in full. But can abstract signs really serve the utopia of a global visual communication ? In spring 2009, the PICTOPIA festival, staged by the “Haus der Kulturen” (House of cultures), will gather the phenomenon under one roof in order to make it accessible to the general public for the first time.

The multifunctional performance space will become the characters’ habitual space and gathering point for an international amalgam of designers, artists, producers and scientists. The event's centre of attention will be an exhibition, that is to feature a variety of images for all the world to see. Aesthetic strategies, from remixing to sampling, surreal and spooky densification and larger than life embodiments, play as big a role as the ritualistic orchestration of characters in our own contemporary culture.

Additionally, the festival's program incorporates the 3rd Pictoplasma Conference, which, since its first incarnation in 2004, has been setting the benchmark for a playful and equally focussed handling with figurative design.

For the first time, a symposium will be integrated, upon which scientists and academics from cultural studies, robotics and media theory will approach the topic. A new edition of the Pictoplasma Animation Festival is showing the characters in motion, off the beaten paths of mainstream. Meanwhile the character walk leads through twenty galleries and project rooms in Berlin-Mitte, where visitors are able to dive into the respective artist's world of images. Find the programme attached as a PDF.

The festival's initiator is the Berlin-based project Pictoplasma, which kick-started the phenomenon of reduced figuration in design, graphic and art via a plurality of picture books, installations, exhibitions and performances, since 1999.

The 3rd Berlin edition of the renowned Pictoplasma Conference continues the unique event dedicated to international character design, following successes in Berlin, New York and Argentina.

Significant designers and artists grant very personal impressions of their oeuvre and the creative processes, inter alia Klaus Haapaniemi (FIN), James Jarvis (GB), Gaston Caba (ARG), Boris Hoppek (DE/ES), W+K Tokyolab (JP), Protey Temen (RUS), Charles Glaubitz (MX) und Andrea Crews (F). The integrated Pictoplasma animation Festival presents a repertory of short films, motion graphics and music videos, which are embossed by the design and staging of the characters.

As a novelty, for the first time ever, the scientific implications of the phenomenon that is character design will be discussed on the Pictoplasma Conference Symposium – featuring contributions by Christoph Bartneck (Information Design, Technische Universität Eindhoven / NL), Cindy Lisica (Art studies, University of the Arts in London / UK), Geoffrey Long (Media Theory, Massachussetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge / USA), Ken Belson (New York Times / USA), Frenchy Lunning (Cultural Studies, Minneapolis College of Art and Design / USA), Klaus-Peter Köpping (Ethnology, Universität Heidelberg), Ragnhild Tronstad (Media studies, Universität Oslo / NOR) and Verena Kuni (Media studies, Johann- Wolfgang-Goethe Universität Frankfurt).
