Summer fete in Pankow : the beat goes on ....

What a summer. What a party. Whilst the whole of Germany and almost all of Berlin fell victim to a sudden downpour, we chilled out in the wonderfully sunny garden of a villa in Panlow. Despite all the Berlin hype, the Pankow borough is a unique and unjustly forgotten gem of the East German era.

The borough was famed for the quality of its residents during the German Democratic Republic. German rock musician Udo Lindenberg was wise to name his 1980s adaptation of ‘Chattanooga Choo Choo’ ‘Sonderzug nach Pankow’ (Special Train to Pankow) – a satire of the East German government, which he performed in East Germany despite being asked not to. This resulted in the government’s immediate cancellation of his East German tour…

Why Pankow? Well, after WWII, between 1949 and 1960, Pankow’s Schönhausen Castle was the official residence of the President of the German Democratic Republic. Countless embassies were set up in Pankow during the German Democratic Republic.
