UPdate 08 - successfully networks industry

Over 100 exhibitors presented the very latest from the commercial and fashion photography industry. Highlight: the SCREENings Award Show presented by TV show Germany’s Next Top Model judge Rolf Scheider

It was the fourth time that Berlin became a platform for the very latest in commercial and fashion photography. On 11 and 12 April, the UPdate Salon for Photography (www.up-date.ws) presented the trends in the international photography industry. Over 100 international exhibitors presented professional visitors with what the future of photography has to offer.

In addition to photographer agencies, production companies and magazines, creatives and professionals from all the industry’s sectors took the opportunity to meet up in person and network. Visitors included renowned photographers such as Marino Parisotto Vay, professionals from the print sector such as Michael Biedowicz (Editor in Chief of Photography, Die Zeit) and top creatives including André Aimaq of Aimaq Rapp Stolle.

The UPdate offers inspiration, exchange and contacts. The photographers agents were particularly pleased with the storm of photographers to their stands between 5 and 7pm. Hence a total of ten photographers managed to win over their very own agents at this year’s UPdate.

The Presence Library was another popular feature, which attracted a multitude of talented photographers to Berlin. And it goes as no surprise – since the complete art buying team of the Hamburg-based Jung von Matt advertising agency were there to view their portfolios. Bianca Winter, Art Buying JvM Hamburg, said: “The Presence Library was a real winner and the organisation of the photographers was ace. We got to meet exciting and promising young talents in photography.” The viewers included representatives from Grey, Heimat, McCann, Otto, Vogue, Amica, Wieden Kennedy, GQ, Vanity Fair, Economia, Bransch, Defrance, New Yorker, Freundin, Springer + Jacoby, Heye und Partner, Dorland, Zeit Magazin, DDB, TBWA, Scholz & Friends and many more.

The winners of the online photography competition SCREENings (www.SCREENings.de) were announced at the UPdate on Friday. The jury included star photographer and director Peter Lindbergh. The awards ceremony took place in the evening and was hosted by Germany’s Next Top Model judge Rolf Scheider, whose infamous casting studio was set up at the UPdate for the fourth time. The winners were Julia Fullerton-Batten, Paul Graves and Kourtney Roy. Over 900 photographer’s websites were entered and screened, Peter Lindbergh commented: “I personally pushed my selection. I was positively surprised at how high the quality was of the work entered!”

This positive outlook was shared by the event organisers, exhibitors and visitors. Sonja Heintschel, Art Buying, Triumph best sums up the atmosphere at the weekend: “It was my favourite UPdate. The environment at the trade convention created a great feeling and there was a wonderful mixture of exhibitors. I am already looking forward to next year!”

The convention also saw the launch of the latest issue of BOOKLET magazine (www.BOOKLET.ws), which was kicked off with a magnificent party at the Delight Rental Studios, simultaneously celebrating the opening of the studio location. High gloss magazine BOOKLET is published on a bi-annual basis and combines interviews and photo shoots by contemporary artists with articles covering the fashion, design and art worlds. The exclusive party was referred to as the event of the weekend and attracted artists, creatives from all over Europe, Berlin’s in-crowd and celebrities.

A 300 page catalogue accompanies the event. It includes an exhibitor directory, a 20 page spread featuring the SCREENings awards finalists, the participants of the Presence Library, as well as a detailed GoSee member listing. The catalogue is published as a full colour hardback and is the industry’s must-have creative guide. It is available through home made GmbH for 20 Euro each. (www.update.ws).
