Sukasuka spiel : a collaborative pop-up shop and showroom in Berlin
sukasuka spiel a month long pop-up shop and showroom in Mitte opened its doors to the press and public in the beginning of June for one month. Hosted within the Belleville store on Rosa-Luxemburg-Strasse, sukasuka spiel is a curated collaboration between thirtyfour and Tactile Wonderland, exclusively providing a month long design playground and showroom throughout the month of June. Both labels are recent arrivals to the Berlin design scene- thirtyfour, a design collective from Malaysia and Tactile Wonderland, interior wall couture consultants from the UK.
“Suka-suka is a Malaysian word which means to have fun, to enjoy yourself and ‘the moment’ and to basically experience something with joy in a carefree, happy manner. The addition of the German word ‘spiel’ extended the word play into something more relevant, which also helped to interpret the concept and energy we wanted to recreate in the space,” said Diwa Tharan, a thirtyfour representative in Germany.
Thirtyfour’s current collection - collection 03, represents functional concepts and structured designs. The brand’s inspiration comes from everyday elements such as trouser pockets, dive bags and architectural structures. Folds and shapes of the leather are manipulated to create classic yet visually arresting pieces.
Thirtyfour was founded in 2006 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia by cousins, ShuennKee Chong and Linda Chong. Armed with a cumulative 20-years of work and design experience at design-houses in New York, Hong Kong and Europe, the cousins decided to found their own design collective upon returning to Malaysia. Hence, thirtyfour, whose name is based on the number of cousins in their family, was born.
Diwa Tharan, a Malaysian who moved to Berlin two years ago and representative of thirtyfour in Germany together with Rebecca Otero, a British designer and one-half of Tactile Wonderland, conceptualised the sukasuka spiel concept.
Later this month, there will also be other London based design talents such as acclaimed jewellery designer, Karin Andreasson, and new-on-the-scene fashion designer, Jessica Dyminska presenting their collection. In addition to this, Berlin based catering consultants, Magic Kitchen will also be serving-up some of their unique culinary creations.
“We wanted to create a colourful, original and engaging space which portrayed our collection and the spirit they embodied as well”, said Rebecca. “In addition to the month-long shop and showroom, we will be putting-on smaller capsule events such as an evening of movie screenings and a creative session called Supper Salon, which is an informal dinner session for ten guests from varied industries and backgrounds to exchange ideas and meet new people,” she added.
